About M.A.T.
About the Owner
Brian Auger has studied and taught martial arts at a number of Korean public schools (dojangs) over the past decade and a half in the Washington, DC area and attained the rank of black belt in 3 martial arts disciplines; Taekwondo, Hapkido, & Kumdo.
Over the years Mr. Auger has learned and truly believes in the spirit of teaching and helping others reach their individual goals. He was given direct examples in his life from his mother who was a private math tutor working from home and his brother who has been a private art tutor from his home as well.
Reason for Founding
Mr. Auger has seen firsthand that the current model for martial arts schools with typically 20+ student class sizes does not provide enough individual instruction. However he observed that when 1 on 1 or smaller student / teacher ratio settings did occur that it would make a remarkable difference in an individual student's own progress and advancement of true technique and form.
Most martial arts schools are the owner's primary source of income, and more students equal more profits. This is why it is in the owner’s best interests to try to take on as many students as possible.
Contrastingly Mr. Auger works full-time in a separate field online from his home during the day which is his primary source of income to support his family. Martial arts just happens to be one of his passions that he enjoys in his spare time.
The solution was simple. Just as students of all sports, studies, and art forms have personal trainers or private tutors to fine tune their skill sets, so too can students of the martial arts benefit from more individualized instruction. There is plenty of evidence in studies of student / teacher class size to support this, which is why that ratio is listed publicly for most educational systems.
As a result Mr. Auger decided it was time to follow his family's footsteps and begin to teach from home too, where his commitment can be focused on the individual student's success, and all are welcome to come experience this at the M.A.T. studio.
